Arsenal are hoping to clear another name from their squad this summer by letting him follow in the footsteps of Carl Jenkinson and Cohen Bramall by joining the Championship.
After the latest report from The Mirror, it appears Chuba Akpom is being lined up by Leeds United as an affordable signing that can come in and replace their top goalscorer from last season, Chris Wood.
Burnley snapped up Wood for a club-record fee of £15million earlier this week and now Thomas Christiansen reportedly wants to re-invest some of that money for what he hopes will be a longer managerial stint at Leeds than others have managed.
At 21 Akpom is recognised as a member of the Arsenal first-team and has quite frankly been a name everyone has seemed to forget about at London Colney for obvious reasons.
Since joining the club as a seven-year-old in 2002, Akpom has played an important role in the academy before Wenger let the youngster head out on loan for more game time.
He’s impressed at the likes of Hull City, Brighton and even in the England U21’s when given a chance but hasn’t done enough to show he’s worthy of a place in the senior squad.
Fresh Arsenal understand that Wenger would be open to letting go of the striker despite his close connection with the club, and Leeds United could cough up the money for a permanent deal.
Wenger’s squad size is still sitting in the 30’s so players like Akpom leaving will be welcome news for the supporters who are demanding big-name players to help land the title this season.
