Arsenal fans are now fully aware that a transfer move was made during the summer, after the news was confirmed by the agent of Alexander Kokorin.
Earlier in the week news broke out from the Dynamo Moscow coach, Andrey Kobelev, who stated that the Gunners approached his side with a loan move.
That offer was for 24-year-old striker Kokorin, a surprise candidate on the shortlist of forward players Arsenal fans may have written up in their heads.
Having played with his boyhood club since 2008, the Russian international has scored just 48 goals in 198 appearances in all competitions, hardly a prolific name to join the Emirates.
However, it now appears that Arsene Wenger really did want the youngster, after the agent of Kokorin confirmed today that a deal was placed by the North London club.
Whilst taking part in an interview with Russia’s Sports Daily, Cyril Loginov assured that a move was made for his client, but the nature of the deal is what made it fall through.
There was a proposal, it was examined and refused. If I am correctly informed, it was absolutely correctly refused.
We have a very good relationship with the coaching staff and the management of the football club Dynamo Moscow. We have, of course, been notified.
And when asked about the possibility of his client settling into life in the Premier League with Wenger’s side, Loginov made his feelings very clear.
I don’t know. I don’t remember many outstanding achievements, except they recently won the FA Cup. So I don’t know, I don’t know.
Doubts loomed over the reality of this transfer taking place, with Kokorin not exactly being a household name amongst football fans.
But when Dynamo Moscow’s head coach opened up about the late goings on in this summer’s transfer window, Arsenal fans began to realise something was being attempted at the club.
There were substantial discussions on Kokorin, but it did not happen.
We vetoed a loan. I believe that Alexander deserves more than a loan.
Although many supporters will be frustrated they didn’t see a fresh face come in over the summer, we can take some positives from this information.
It shows that business was being carried out, and Wenger was doing his best to bring in some fresh legs to relieve the pressures on Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.
However, when you look at it on the flip side, how will our attacking duo take this news seeing as it may reveal Wenger had his doubts as to whether the pair could do enough.
