Whilst reporting for international duty with Kenya, the 23-year-old spoke to a local TV channel and admitted his personal future wasn’t in his hands.

It would be nice to move to Arsenal, but at this moment such decisions can only be made by Southampton and that is where my concentration as a player is.

The defensive midfielder was heavily linked with the Gunners two years ago, but Wenger was reluctant to bring in any reinforcements, and instead Wanyama arrived at Southampton for £12.5m.

Since then he has been a vital cog in the Saints’ engine, racking up an impressive 43 appearances during two seasons in the Premier League.

The Gunners have been criticised for not having a back-up option to Francis Coquelin, who has enjoyed a captivating second half of the season in the centre defensive midfield position.

But now it seems Wanyama could be a viable candidate to join up with the FA Cup winners, who could lose the likes of Matthieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta this summer.

Wanyama could be available for around £13m, a price that has been well justified after already proving his worth in English football, so Wenger knows he won’t be taking a risk with this one.

However, if the Gunners fail to make a move for Wanyama, they have options in Morgan Schneiderlin and Geoffrey Kondogbia, who were both reportedly close to a move back in January.

Arsene Wenger has assured the fans he is only in the market for top players this summer, and the talents of all of the above options certainly suit that criteria.
