Mats Hummels is a name being linked with Arsenal, a well recognised centre-back. The 38 capped German International is a player that may be looking for a move from Dortmund in January and if a transfer happens, it will send a big message to our rivals.
Released from Bayern Munich in 2009, Hummels became the core foundations to Dortmund’s uprise into Europe’s elite, winning successive titles in the between 2010 and 2012. He’s won a total of five titles so far since joining ‘Die Borussen’ and reached the biggest final in European Football, losing narrowly to Bayern Munich in 2013. An important figure for Germany too, overtaking counterpart Per Mertesacker as one Germany’s key Centre-backs, becoming a World-Cup winner. One of the best defenders around even with Dortmund’s poor form this season, sitting 17th in the table (second bottom) at the halfway stage in the season. He is still seen as World-class footballer and has attracted interest from a some of the biggest clubs in World football.
Hummels was nominated for player of the tournament at last year’s World Cup in Brazil. He is the current captain of Borussia Dortmund and has watched key players snatched away at the hands of his former club.
Standing at 6ft 3 inches, the German centre back is not afraid to get a tackle in. A natural right footer. Hummels is still only 26 and has a lot to offer to Arsenal. Strong, good in the air and reads the game terrifically well. Intercepts the opposition on numerous occasions. The physicality in his game it Premier league suitable. His name alone will send a positive vibe to a team like Arsenal, who are accused many times for lacking leadership, *cough* Niall Quinn. Mats Hummels offers leadership, he could potentially be wearing the armband for Arsenal if he was to join.
He offers goals too, scoring a header in a 4-0 win against Portugal, he can distribute the ball forward with good passing abilities. He’s faster than Mertesacker if that gets him any brownie points. This season he has only managed 10 games out of a possible 17, his longest period out for two months with a ligament injury. That won’t bode well as we don’t seem to be blessed with good fitness at Arsenal. If you don’t want Klopp because of Dortmund’s season, then it won’t surprise me if you don’t want him either. He has had his poor moments for Dortmund but injuries have not helped his situation currently.
Currently on a winter-break, the thought of Mat Hummels is very much a dream at the moment. He’s been reported to be quoted on saying that he does not need Champions league to be willing to move. An estimated value of £30m (Transfermarkt.co.uk). With his contract expiring in 2017, a player of his standards will not come cheap, but if you’re going to go big on a Centre-back, he’s more than the ideal player to do it on.
