Central Midfield:
Unlike the other three positions this position is not in such pressing need in a numerical sense, but one I feel – on the football front – has to be looked at. Mikel Arteta, for me, is not of the adequate level to hold the first-choice defensive midfielder role within our team. The Spaniard is a good player, and against 13/14 of the teams in the Premier League I have no qualms about him, but when we play the top sides it’s clear to see he’s just not at the level needed – and this is shown by the hammerings we’ve taken away to Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea. We need someone who has more of a defensive mindset, and will naturally provide more protection for a back four who I feel have been made to look worse than they are on occasion this season; as a result of being left exposed and outnumbered. Morgan Schneilderlin is a name that has been mentioned but he does not convince me, as I don’t think he’ll solve the issue of our players not being able to perform in the big games. Someone with a more international pedigree, such as Sami Khedira, would be the idealistic signing, and would give the Ramsey’s, the Ozil’s, the Wilshere’s the chance to perform and concentrate on what they do best, in the knowledge that they have a more solid platform from which to build.
