Centre Back:
Speculation has been rife that club captain Thomas Vermaelen may be looking to leave Emirates Stadium this summer. The Belgian international has seen his game time heavily restricted since March 2013, when Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were paired together in favour of Vermaelen at Bayern Munich, and, with just a year left on his contract, the Belgian is understandably starting to consider his options. Even with Vermaelen, we have just three senior centre backs at the club, and the option of playing Bacary Sagna in this position has now gone, and so a centre back is likely to be signed one way or another. With Mertesacker and Koscielny both reaching their late-20s we should be looking to sign a younger option, under the age of 25, who can go onto be a long-term successor to the role. As with the goalkeeper situation, I can see this being left until later on in August, as much will depend on how the future of Vermaelen pans out.
