5 Positions Arsenal Need To Strengthen This Summer

Goalkeeper:

Starting from the back, the first area where Arsenal need to make an addition this summer is in the goalkeeping department. With Lukasz Fabianski and Emiliano Viviano both leaving the club this summer, Wojciech Szczesny has left as the only senior goalkeeper at the club, with Damian Martinez the only youngster at the club with any first team experience – and even he can only boast two Capital One Cup appearances to his name. Martinez is therefore hardly ready to take on the mantle and play a succession of games should anything happen to Szczesny, and so it is expected a new goalkeeper will be brought in. The Pole enjoyed a very impressive season last year and it is unlikely Arsene Wenger will look to bring in a new ‘number 1’ during this window, as he seems to have complete faith in Szczesny and backs him for the long term, meaning we will look to sign an understudy. This isn’t the easiest of signings to make, as there are very few players of a decent standard who will sign for a club knowing they are there only to play second fiddle; as we found last summer when the shortage of options led to us bringing in Viviano on loan. It will be very hard to replace Fabianski, who became something of a cult hero during the Cup run last season, as he was probably the best no.2 in the Premier League, but as long we bring someone in of a decent enough level to play ten straight games, should the situation arise, then that is all we need. This is one I can see being left until late on in the window, with Martinez being given game time in the pre-season friendlies.
