Mathieu Debuchy
Much like Arteta, the Frenchman who was signed from Newcastle last summer, has also endured much of his début campaign at the Emirates on the sidelines.
Following Bacary Sagna’s departure to Manchester City before the World Cup, Arsenal were in need of an experienced replacement to fill the void left at right-back, with Carl Jenkinson being the only recognisable option at the club’s disposal.
In stepped Debuchy, who returned from a decent international campaign with his country at the expense if his fellow Frenchman, Sagna – overlooked by manager Didier Deschamps. His acquisition was met with satisfaction from Arsenal fans, despite the reported initial interest in Serge Aurier of Toulouse.
Debuchy showed great promise and convinced many that he adapted into the team quickly. However, after only 7 appearances in August, an injury during the 2-2 draw against Man City at the start of September, kept him out of action for the following three months.
He returned in December, a period in which he scored his first club goal in the 2-2 draw at Anfield, but was again ruled out for the next few months with a shoulder injury, sustained in January’s home encounter with Stoke.
Since then, his only appearance was in the FA Cup semi-final tie with Reading, where he looked visibly rusty and far from full fitness.
Overall, despite proving to be a solid talent, it’s difficult to call him a success when he’s been injured throughout almost the entire campaign.
