3 Things We Learnt After Liverpool Sink Arsenal 4-3 On Opening Day

3 – Missing Mentality

Arsenal were missing three of their most experienced players due to match fitness, but is that a worthy excuse to not knowing who’s in charge?

Many of us turn around and state that there aren’t enough leaders out on that football pitch, and most of the time we’re right in what we argue.

Chambers and Holding are new to the fray and honestly they did the job they were put in to do, we’re not singling them out here. I’m talking about the regulars, the people we all have printed on the back of our shirts.

Where are the leaders, where are the people out there that are going to lift someone off of their ass and tell that someone to get back up and fight in this game for the 60,000 people watching.

Gone. Players like Tony Adams and Martin Keown who knew what it meant to pull on that shirt and play for the badge, they’ve disappeared altogether from this club.

Now don’t get me wrong, I know it’s only the start of the season but if we don’t address these issues now then we’ll just have to carry on papering over the cracks.

The modern game is different I respect that, but instead of players having a sit down and a strop because things aren’t going their way I want to see a bit of passion.

Mentality doesn’t have to come from the players, it comes from Arsene Wenger. I’ll bet my house he wasn’t in the changing room giving them a damn good talking to.

Ten years ago he would’ve been in there rallying them on, telling them to get back out there and change the game in the first ten minutes.

Ironically, that’s exactly what Jurgen Klopp did and look at the results. I don’t see a manager on the sideline who has the same drive as he did all those years ago.

The players are beginning to realise that, and with there being no ruthless decisions to drop players people are no longer fighting for their place in this squad and that worries me.

Something has to change and fast, a loss against Leicester next weekend and that’s already six points down the drain, six vital points that could prove costly in May.
