2. Squad Depth
As mentioned before, three central-defenders is not enough for a team that will be battling on the Premier League and Champions League front, as well as the battles for the domestic cups. Having three players in this position allowed for extremely limited rotation, as one player would have to remain while the other earns a well deserved rest.
Looking at our squad currently, those three defenders will have to be the focal point of our entire season. They’d need to be relied on for each competition and an injury to one of these players would be catastrophic to our chances of success. Should this happen, there’s no alternative. The remaining duo would be called upon week-in, week-out for both Champions League and Premier League fixtures.
Again, a young defender gives us a fail safe. They can be called upon when required for league, European or cup matches. They’d also benefit from partnering one of the experienced defenders when called upon, which brings me onto my final, and arguably most important, point.
