3 Arsenal Players That Deserve More Game Time

2. Francis Coquelin

At 23 years old it is quite hard to see where we are going with Francis Coquelin, he’s someone who I’m not too sure on after returning from Germany, where he had a dismal season at Freiburg, completing just 16 appearances without finding the net once.

I’ve put Francis in my top three not because I want him to play every week, but because I don’t know whether he has what it takes in such a demanding area. He lacks height, strength and most importantly experience in top-tier English football. So why has Wenger kept hold of him?

Speaking in 2011, Wenger told Arsenal Player, “He is more a player who likes to cover ground than a player who starts from the back in a tactical position”.  Sure, it isn’t his job to come up with a dazzling display each time, but as a centre defensive midfielder he has no room for error.

With the recent loss of both Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey, it was possible for Coquelin to be thrown into the mix. It’s a position that has cursed the Arsenal squad for years now, and I’d love to see him step in and prove me wrong.

Maybe Wenger feels he isn’t ready to be a crucial member yet, but at 23 you can’t really have that as an excuse. I feel a loan out to another PL side is what he needs to progress, a lot like the situation of Jack Wilshere when he moved to Bolton.

In Francis Coquelin, you have a versatile player who isn’t too big for his boots. What I mean is if you tell him to do a job, he will do it with no questions asked, and Wenger needs someone like that who is ready to fight for their place. Bring Coquelin in and he can show Arteta and Diaby that they won’t simply stroll back into the squad.

After all, healthy competition is always a positive at this club.
