With the transfer window now in full flow, the rumours are starting to heat up. Arsenal fans throughout the world are eagerly awaiting to see who Arsene Wenger will bring to the club in January after a tough start to the domestic season.
So what would be the ideal signing for Arsenal to make this January?
A name that is continuously being touted for Arsenal fans is the name of Real Madrid’s and France’s centre back Raphael Varane. Arsenal are in need of a centre back that is capable of challenging for a first team position and with German World Cup winner Per Mertersacker struggling for form, a move for Varane would be beneficial for Arsenal.
After previously missing out on Varane when he was at Lens, Arsene Wenger is increasingly interested in making another move for the French defender.
Arsenal are in need of world class acquisitions who can perform at the top level not only now but for the future as well. With Varane, they would be gaining a player who has the best years ahead of him. With the club struggling for defensive stability and injury problems mounting, a move for Varane would be perfect.
Varane, 21, has an abundance of talent in his locker. Standing at 6ft tall, the Frenchman has been frustrated with a lack of game time and has played back up to Sergio Ramos and Pepe. The commanding figure of Varane would be suited to an Arsenal team who are lacking height and physicality within their ranks.
At just 21, the potential to form a solid partnership with French compatriot Laurent Koscielny is there to be seen. The pair both have similar qualities and both would have no problems fitting in with one another. With Real Madrid, seeking £20 million for the Frenchman’s services, Arsenal would have no problems in purchasing the player.
There should be no ifs or buts if a player of Varane’s calibre becomes available. Consistent displays under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid increased the Frenchman’s development and he has come leaps and bounds since.
A cut price move for Varane would be huge for Arsenal going forwards. With the Frenchman being at a tender age of 21 and fast growing into an excellent defender, he has his best years still ahead of him. There would be nothing better for the talented player to continue his development under the guidance of Arsene Wenger and Arsenal.
I believe that if Real Madrid are willing to cash in on a player of Varane’s quality, Arsene Wenger has to make a move for him. A player of Varane’s presence, is just the signing that Arsenal need in order to move forwards and challenge in not only England but Europe as well.
A move for Varane makes perfect sense for Arsenal. Will it happen? Time will tell.
