Arsene Wenger has handed Arsenal fans a hammer-blow in the final few days of the transfer window after revealing there’s no chance of signing Thomas Lemar.
The Gunners have been chasing the 21-year-old for the entirety of the summer and have already had two bids rejected as they look to capitalise on Monaco’s willingness to sell.
However, it seems Wenger was too slow with his bids as the Ligue 1 champions have shut up shop after selling their key players to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
As Wenger prepares for this Sunday’s crucial Premier League game away to Liverpool, he admitted several killer aspects as transfer business begins to hot up in the last seven days.
Despite admitting he will do all he can to ensure Oxlade-Chamberlain signs a new contract, there was no avoiding his disappointment of losing out on his number one target:
It’s dead (a chance of signing Lemar) because Monaco have closed the door and are still on cases like Mbappe and Fabinho.
Monaco is at a stage where they have closed the door.
It’s very unlike Wenger to publicly comment on Arsenal’s transfer interest so this tells me the deal is 100% gone unless Monaco fail to ship off Kylian Mbappe to PSG.
It all means the next week will continue to be filled with speculation and last-minute offers as Wenger attempts to bring in at least one player that will put the fans’ mind at ease.
Arsenal are likely to go after Lemar again next summer as Wenger is a long-term admirer and will have to find some sort of replacement for Alexis Sanchez if he fails to put pen to paper.
