Serge Aurier
Toulouse’s star performer this season – Serge Aurier is a name Arsenal fans will become very familiar with in the coming months.
Heavily linked with Arsenal recently, the 21-year-old has been nothing short of a revelation this season. In his 31 appearances for the Ligue 1 side in 2013/14, Serge has scored an incredible 6 goals and provided 6 assists from defence.
Aurier’s style fits in with Wenger’s philosophy too. The Ivorian is known to prefer playing quick, short passes to teammates as he makes his way up the pitch. Although an excellent crosser of the ball, Aurier creates a lot of chances via through balls and combination play in the centre of the pitch – which is rather unusual for the right back.
To cap it all off, Aurier is a superb defender, capable of playing in central defence as well as out on the right. His tackling and ability in aerial duels is outstanding, and he has incredible concentration for someone so young.
Although he has no experience playing at the highest level, I personally think Serge would not only act as a suitable replacement for Sagna – but an improvement as well. Although his first season in English football might be a little shaky, the spark and enthusiasm he provides could give Arsenal the serious attacking threat from right back they’ve been missing.
Suitability: 9/10
For me, Serge Aurier has to be our main defensive target this summer. With Wenger’s guidance, he could reach the level of Bacary Sagna in a few years – and he would offer us cover in central defence too. Although he may have a few bad games to start with, his potential and raw talent could see him turn into one of the best right backs in world football.
Can we afford to miss out on this deal? No way, Serge!
