In the first-team squad at the moment Arsenal only have two out-and-out centre-backs in Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, and whilst Calum Chambers has started off his career very well in the heart of defence another centre-half with experience is needed, especially if Arsenal are going to mount a serious title charge. Here are my three picks for a possible new player at centre-back.
1. Winston Reid
The New Zealand international has picked up a hatful of Premiership experience since West Ham’s promotion to the top flight three years ago, and would provide excellent back-up at the heart of defence. At 6ft 3 in he is a commanding presence and the price of any potential move would be pretty minimal. Last term for the Hammers Reid played 22 times, winning more than half of his aerial duels and in the process not committing any defensive errors (via Squawka). Ultimately, were Arsenal to sign Reid it’d be a solid signing, however though there are a couple of drawbacks. Reid’s injury record is not the best and in previous seasons he has often missed large chunks of the campaign. He is also unproven at the top-level and it remains to be seen whether he could handle the pressures of playing Champions League football. West Ham are unlikely to sell at this late stage in the window, but if he does become available at a reasonable price I think that it would be a more than decent signing.
