Report: Jorginho in talks to leave, as Arsenal could replace with long-term target this month

Arsenal face a pivotal decision over Jorginho’s immediate future, with reports suggesting his representative has initiated discussions with Palmeiras as the midfielder approaches the final months of his contract.

Jorginho, who joined Arsenal in January 2023, has been a dependable option in midfield but is yet to extend his deal, which expires this summer.

Sources indicate that Jorginho’s agent, João Santos, is actively exploring alternatives, raising the prospect of an exit before the transfer window closes this month. Should Arsenal sanction a January departure, the club would likely need to act quickly to secure a replacement, particularly given the demanding fixture schedule and the need for squad depth.

Palmeiras would be keen to do a deal this month given it is currently the off-season in Brazil.

One potential option for Arsenal is Douglas Luiz, a long-term target who has been linked with the Gunners on multiple occasions. Luiz, currently at Juventus after moving from Aston Villa in the summer, has failed to nail down a place in the side, so reports indicate Juventus might be willing to facilitate a sale or loan deal this month.

Unlike Jorginho, Luiz offers versatility as both a number 6 and a number 8, making him an appealing candidate for Mikel Arteta. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively could provide the Arsenal manager with greater flexibility in a stretched midfield.

While Jorginho’s departure would leave a gap in terms of experience and technical control, Luiz’s dynamic style could align better with Arsenal’s high-intensity approach. Moreover, with the Gunners competing on multiple fronts, securing a player of Luiz’s profile could strengthen their chances of sustaining a title challenge and progressing in Europe.

Allowing Jorginho to leave this month would not be without risks, as it would disrupt the established midfield hierarchy. Certainly any departure this month would need a replacement, given Arsenal’s already stretched squad.
