Report Card: Francis Coquelin

Francis Coquelin Report Card 2016

  • Age: 25
  • Position: Centre Defensive Midfielder
  • Squad#: 34
  • Height: 5ft 10in

Season Prediction:

It’s time to stop talking about that one performance against Manchester City back in 2015 and move on to the player Coquelin now has to become, a player with maturity. Sure, he’s great at getting that last ditch tackle in and scaring opponents off the ball, but he has to control his emotions. He’s one of the most passionate players we have but if he continues to get silly yellow cards inside the first 20 minutes of a game then suddenly we don’t get the best out of him.

Player Objectives:

Telling him to stop tackling isn’t the answer, it’s his best attribute after all. But if he can watch the likes of Xhaka and Elneny, players who are calm on the ball then he’d make far less work for himself. At the moment you’d say he’s been put at the bottom of the list for a starting CDM place and he won’t like that, so we need to see a reaction from him on the training ground.

Best Attributes:

The fact that he’s better defensive midfield cover than Mathieu Flamini was is an attribute in itself, but we all know what he can do when he’s in the mood. He’s ruthless and isn’t afraid to stand up and get in someone’s face and I think that’s what Arsenal have been missing. Too often they’re expected to roll over and take it but if Coquelin can inject some fire into these players then we might look like we’re up for a fight.

Weak Areas:

Discipline, I’m not gonna say much more than that because we all know what he can be like when he’s had one too many cans of Red Bull before a match.
