Interesting Fact: Martinez was called up to the Argentina senior national team at just 18 years old, but has never been capped.
Martinez has only League Cup games on his Arsenal CV. He’s yet to really show enough quality to have him competing for anything else. Having been called up to the Argentina squad at just 18, there was a lot of optimism about Martinez from the staff and fans at Arsenal. At just 22 there is still a lot of time for him to make it to the top, whether that is with Arsenal or not is another question entirely. Neither Ospina nor Szczesny are old, so it’s hard to see a route through for Martinez. He played 11 games for Sheffield Wednesday on loan last season.
How much will he play?
Martinez will be lucky to play for Arsenal at all this season. In Szczesny and Ospina Arsenal have two quality goalkeepers to compete for the number one spot. In the cup games Ospina is likely to be given game time and only if there is an injury to one, or both of the first choice goalkeepers, will we see Martinez this campaign.
How well will he do?
Considering he is unlikely to play much, if at all for Arsenal this season, then it’s hard to say how well he’ll do. As the third choice keeper, Arsene Wenger may be willing to let Martinez go out on loan, with an emergency recall option. If this happens, the best Martinez can hope for is joining a Championship club on loan and impressing there.
