After reports were released suggesting Arsenal weren’t willing to do any more business this season, our hopes of seeing a January signing took a huge knock.
However, The Daily Mirror believe Arsenal are on red alert for the signature of Bayern Munich’s defensive star David Alaba, after his future playing intentions were leaked.
The report suggests that Alaba would choose London over anywhere else in England, and just two clubs (Arsenal and Chelsea) could afford to get the left-back through the door and on to the welcome mat.
At 24 years of age, Alaba has already proven himself on an international stage and is tipped to be the finished article in his position for the next few seasons.
That poses a lot of questions for Arsene Wenger, who has been under intense scrutiny as to whether or not Kieran Gibbs is a suitable replacement in the left full-back position.
Despite having a super run of form last season, Nacho Monreal has made a number of mistakes this time round and many Arsenal fans believe full-back is our latest weak link.
Alaba has experience at playing at centre back as well, and Bayern’s price tag of £34million wouldn’t be too much to put the Gunners off financially for such a versatile player.
Per Mertesacker is set to leave at the end of this season and Monreal turns 31 next February, so his future at playing in the top-level is also uncertain.
Alaba would paper over a lot of the cracks that Arsenal have suffered in defence for the last ten years, and with fellow defenders in Mustafi, Bellerin and Gabriel the Gunners would have a huge standard of defenders for years to come.
