Reports from Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) on Sunday indicated that Barcelona might lose out to Arsenal in their attempt to sign Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino. This claim is reinforced by Monday’s edition of Sport, which details Arsenal’s progress in securing the midfielder.
With Merino’s contract running until 2025 and no intention from the player to extend it, Real Sociedad are anticipating a sale this summer. The player is thought to be valued at around €25m. The Spanish international has caught the eye of both Barcelona and Arsenal, however, Barca’s delayed ability to make an offer gives Arsenal, spearheaded by Mikel Arteta, an edge.
Arteta is said to be ‘determined’ to bring his fellow Spaniard to Arsenal. He has already reached out to Merino, sharing his ambitious plans for the player at the Emirates. This direct communication has greatly appealed to Merino, who is now attracted to the prospect of playing under Arteta’s guidance.
Having previously played for Newcastle United in the 2017/18 season, Merino has a chance to return to England with the full backing of Arteta at Arsenal, now aged 28 and in the prime of his career. He was the highest rated player in an impressive Real Sociedad team last season (WhoScored).
Arsenal’s need to strengthen their midfield this summer has become increasingly urgent. The uncertainty surrounding Thomas Partey’s future at the club has left a significant gap that needs addressing. Partey, who has been pivotal in Arsenal’s midfield, is likely to leave, as he’s also in a similar contract situation to Merino, which has put the Gunners on high alert for potential replacements.
Additionally, Arsenal’s ambitions to compete at the highest level domestically and in Europe necessitate a robust and dynamic midfield. With such a busy schedule ahead next season, the team need to be two-deep in every role.
