Report: Arsenal ready to trigger £50m release clause for defender

As Arsenal gear up for a potentially transformative summer window, much of the transfer talk has centred around attacking additions. Links to top forwards dominate the headlines, and rightly so – Mikel Arteta’s side have made huge strides, but adding more firepower could be the difference between falling short and lifting major trophies. Yet while new attackers may grab the attention, Arsenal cannot afford to neglect their back line. In fact, a smart defensive signing could prove just as important.

Among the most intriguing links is Dean Huijsen, the Bournemouth centre-back who has caught the attention of several Premier League clubs. Signed last summer from Juventus for just £13 million, the 19-year-old has been a revelation on the south coast. Now, with a £50 million release clause in place, he’s being tipped for a big move – and Arsenal are one of several major Premier League clubs keen to make a move.

Gabriel and Saliba have been colossal this season, but they’ve also played a lot of minutes. Huijsen’s arrival would offer the kind of high-quality rotation Arteta has lacked, protecting his starting duo from burnout without a drop-off in quality. With his imposing frame, confidence on the ball, and tactical awareness beyond his years, Huijsen already looks like a player who belongs at the top level.

Defensive depth will be even more crucial given the expected departures. Kieran Tierney will be released, Oleksandr Zinchenko will likely be sold, and Jakub Kiwior’s future is far from certain. That’s potentially three exits – so one high-level addition makes perfect sense.

A potential alternative is Jorrel Hato, a player Arsenal have tracked for years and who could follow in the footsteps of Jurrien Timber. Hato can play both left and left centre back.

As we’ve seen this season, Arsenal need the quality depth to allow sensible rotation to avoid major injuries that curtail the season.

It’s about more than just numbers – it’s about flexibility. That group offers a perfect balance: left and right-footed options, centre-backs who can play full-back, and full-backs who can invert or overlap. Huijsen is very two-footed and can play either left or right centre back. It would be a modern, modular defence suited to any tactical tweak Arteta wants to implement.

Arsenal may be hunting goals this summer, but don’t be surprised if one of their most important moves is at the other end of the pitch.
