With the transfer window nearing its dramatic conclusion, Arsenal are firmly in the race to sign Mathys Tel, as a move to Manchester United has now been ruled out.
The 19-year-old French forward had initially seemed set for Tottenham in a deal worth around £50m, but he rejected the move. United then emerged as frontrunners, only for negotiations with Bayern to completely collapse in the final hours, as reported by Florian Plettenberg. Bayern have stood firm, rejecting all proposals despite Tel’s preference to join the Red Devils.
Arsenal now remain a serious contender for Tel, with Mikel Arteta’s squad in need of attacking reinforcements. The Gunners have faced a depleted frontline, with Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka injured.
Tel, who is comfortable playing across the forward line, would offer much-needed depth and versatility. While he has found opportunities limited at Bayern behind Harry Kane, the promise of first-team minutes is expected to be a crucial factor in his decision.
A loan move with an option to buy could be an ideal solution for Arsenal, allowing them to assess Tel’s adaptation to the Premier League before committing to a long-term deal.
Given Bayern’s reluctance to entertain offers from United, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal’s approach (likely just a loan offer) can persuade the Bundesliga champions to change their stance.
But with Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United now seemingly out of the race, it leaves Arsenal as the most likely destination on deadline day.
However, with the deadline looming, Arsenal’s ability to move swiftly and decisively could be key to securing a late attacking addition.
