Report: Arsenal getting ‘closer and closer’ to major deal after £40m bid rejected

It looks like Arsenal are closing in on their first major signing of the transfer window, with a player who starred at Euro 2024.

A deal for Riccardo Calafiori to join Arsenal is getting closer and closer, according to the Italian source Di Marzio.

This follows multiple reports (and BBC) of Arsenal’s interest in the Italian in recent days, with Italian press reporting that the Gunners had a £40million bid rejected, but that amount appears close to the players valuation.

Despite interest from PSG, Chelsea, and Bayer Leverkusen, Mikel Arteta’s team has presented a more intriguing project and offer for both the player and Bologna.

Following Italy’s exit from Euro 2024, the upcoming week is crucial as Arsenal aim to progress discussions.

Calafiori, a promising defender who can play as a left-back and centre-back, would likely slot into the left-back position for Arsenal.

However, this potential acquisition means Arsenal would probably need to offload some of their current players in that area.

Nuno Tavares, Kieran Tierney, and Oleksandr Zinchenko are among those who might be sold to make space for Calafiori. Additionally, Jakub Kiwior could also move on if Calafiori joins the squad, with Juventus showing interest in the Polish international.

The addition of Calafiori to Arsenal’s ranks signals a significant reshuffle in their defence, as Arteta looks to fine-tune his squad for the upcoming season. The next week will be pivotal in determining whether this transfer materialises, as Arsenal push to finalise their plans amidst keen competition from other top European clubs.
