Arsenal look like they may be on their way to finally making an attacking signing this month.
A season-ending injury to Gabriel Jesus compounded a major injury to Bukayo Saka. Arsenal, who were already shorter than their rivals in attack, are now on their last legs in that department and must make a signing, or two – before the window closes in little over a week.
Reports emerging on Wednesday night suggest Arsenal are favourites to sign Wolves forward Matheus Cunha this month as speculation around his future intensifies.
The 25-year-old Brazilian appears increasingly likely to leave Molineux, with Wolves reporter Ryan Leister stating it’s now “more likely that Matheus Cunha will depart Wolves this window than stay.”
The situation has escalated quickly, with several Premier League clubs reportedly showing interest, and Cunha himself said to be keen on a move.
George Lakin, another Wolves correspondent, has added further weight to Arsenal’s pursuit, claiming they are leading the race to secure Cunha’s signature ahead of Chelsea and Newcastle, who have also made contact.
Some rumours suggest that Arsenal may have already agreed personal terms with the versatile forward, putting them in a strong position to complete the transfer. If true, it would be a significant step towards reinforcing Mikel Arteta’s attacking options.
Cunha is valued at 50million euros on transfermarkt, but it would likely take more to convince Wolves to sell this month, even with the player pushing for a move.
Cunha’s unsettled status at Wolves has been evident in recent days. Following their 3-1 loss to Chelsea on Monday night, Wolves manager Vitor Pereira was critical of Cunha’s attitude, saying: “He’s a captain… he can be frustrated as he wants to win, but everyone in the dressing room wants to win. I do NOT like his body language.” Such remarks have only fuelled speculation that a departure could suit both player and club.
Arsenal’s need for attacking reinforcements is well-documented, and Cunha’s ability to play on the left or as a centre forward fits the bill perfectly. He offers Premier League experience and is in the prime of his career, aligning with Arsenal’s desire for players ready to make an immediate impact.
The timing of this transfer saga is particularly intriguing, given that Arsenal travel to Wolves on Saturday. Even if he doesn’t join Arsenal, it now appears Cunha will not be playing for Wolves, which would help the Gunners chances.
