Report: Arsenal close to making first January signing, and they want more

Arsenal appear to be pressing forward with their pursuit of Rosenborg’s Sverre Nypan, as reported by David Ornstein (The Athletic).

Dialogue with both the Norwegian club and the player’s representatives is reportedly advancing, though no agreements have been finalised. At just 18 years old, Nypan is widely considered one of Europe’s most promising young talents and could prove a shrewd addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Nypan has been turning heads since making his Norwegian league debut at just 15 and further cemented his reputation by becoming Rosenborg’s youngest-ever league goalscorer at 16 years and 145 days old.

Unsurprisingly, interest in the versatile midfielder has grown significantly, but Arsenal are hopeful of winning the race for his signature. His potential arrival would see him link up with his compatriot and Arsenal captain, Martin Ødegaard, a connection that might help smooth his transition to English football. It had been reported earlier today that Nypan was heading to Manchester City to hear their plans for him.

While Nypan is viewed as a long-term project aligning with Arsenal’s focus on recruiting emerging global talent, he would also add much-needed short-term depth. The timing of the Norwegian off-season aligns perfectly with Arsenal’s January window needs, especially with injuries stretching the squad. Nypan’s ability to operate as an attacking midfielder—whether as a No. 8 or a No. 10—offers Arteta flexibility in the middle of the park. Crucially, his addition would allow Ethan Nwaneri, another young talent, to focus on covering the right wing in Bukayo Saka’s absence.

This potential signing would also mark the first for Arsenal under interim sporting director Jason Ayto, following Edu’s departure. It signals the club’s intent to maintain its momentum in squad-building despite the disruption behind the scenes. While much of the January focus remains on bolstering the attack, securing a versatile midfielder like Nypan could be an astute move to stabilise and strengthen Arsenal’s title push.

Even if Arsenal manage to beat off competition to sign Nypan, it wouldn’t be enough for this window, given the circumstances. Arsenal still need forward additions and Arteta has said as much. Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko have been the heaviest linked, but deals for either appear difficult this month.
