Arsenal are set to sign Atletico Madrid’s Mario Suarez in January, according to reports in Spain.
The Gunners are looking to strengthen their midfield in the winter window, with names like William Carvalho and Moussa Sissoko being mentioned.
However, according to Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda who is formerly the editor of leading Spanish newspapers Marca, Suarez is the one Arsenal are set to sign.
27-year-old Suarez was a regular fit in Diego Simeone’s side last term that dramatically clinched the La Liga title and reached the final of the Champions League but he has failed to maintain a regular place in the starting squad this season.
That has led to the player eying a move away from the Spanish capital, which has opened Arsenal to the possibility of bringing Suarez to the Premier League.
Arsenal are looking for a new midfielder to sit ahead of their back-line for the second-half of the campaign, with the Gunners looking to replace Mathieu Flamini in the starting line-up.
Therefore, bringing in a player of Suarez’ calibre and experience will be a major boost to the Arsenal squad, who will be looking for the final piece of Wenger’s jigsaw puzzle.
Inda states that Suarez will ‘almost certainly move in the winter window’, which will come as big news to Arsenal.
However it remains to be seen whether Suarez is a top priority or an alternative to the likes of Carvalho, although the Portuguese ace would cost a considerable amount more than Atletico’s want away star.
Arsene Wenger admitted in a recent press conference that the midfield area is where he is looking to strengthen in January and the Gunners will want to complete any activity quickly.
