Reliable source says Isak is ‘open to Arsenal move’ as Gunners focus on Swedish strikers

Arsenal’s pursuit of a new striker is heating up, and according to Sami Mokbel, Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak remains Mikel Arteta’s number one target this summer.

The Sweden international is said to have strong support from key decision-makers at the Emirates, with the BBC reporting that there is “almost universal backing” behind a potential move.

Well-placed sources have also told BBC Sport that Isak would be open to a move to London, a development that could give Arsenal the green light to make their move. With 21 Premier League goals in 30 appearances this season, the 25-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s most technically gifted and clinical forwards — capable of fitting seamlessly into Arteta’s fluid attacking system.

However, signing Isak won’t be easy or cheap. Newcastle are under no pressure to sell unless a huge offer arrives, and the Swedish striker could command a fee of around £100million. That has prompted some within Arsenal — including new transfer chief Andrea Berta — to consider alternatives, with Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres viewed as a more attainable option. Gyökeres could be available for nearly half the cost of Isak and is also admired for his physicality, finishing, and pressing intensity.

Recent analysis by Fresh Arsenal highlighted both Isak and Gyökeres as the two best statistical fits for Arsenal’s striker needs. While Isak offers elite-level ball control and link-up play, Gyökeres has exploded in Portugal with Sporting, registering goals and assists at a remarkable rate. In fact, some even believe Gyökeres could be the best finisher in the world right now.

Whilst any deal for Isak would likely drag on over the summer, a deal for Gyokeres could be more straightforward and be sewn up quickly, allowing more time, funds and focus to be spent on strengthening elsewhere, with a new left-winger also a target.

Ultimately, Arsenal’s ambition to close the gap on Manchester City and maintain their Champions League momentum hinges on landing a top-tier striker. Whether it’s the elegance of Isak or the power of Gyökeres, the Gunners appear ready to make a significant investment to lead the line next season.
