Midfielder confirms he’s leaving Arsenal this summer, could raise £20m

As Arsenal prepare for a busy summer transfer window, one significant move on the horizon is the sale of midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga.

The club aims to raise around £20million from his departure, a decision driven by mutual agreement between the player and the club.

Albert Sambi Lokonga arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 2021 with much promise, heralded as a potential future star. However, his time at the club has seen limited opportunities to cement a first-team spot. Despite showcasing glimpses of his talent, Lokonga has struggled to secure a regular place in Mikel Arteta’s starting lineup. With fierce competition for midfield positions, Lokonga’s playing time has been sporadic, leading to his decision to seek more consistent opportunities elsewhere.

In an interview with the BBC, Lokonga revealed the discussions held with the club regarding his future: “For me, I had a discussion with Arsenal, and the conclusion was the best thing for me was to leave the club, so now it’s up to my agent and the club to find something,” Lokonga stated.

He also mentioned that he still has a contract with Arsenal, which includes one year plus an option for an additional year, leaving some flexibility in the negotiation process.

Arsenal’s decision to sell Lokonga aligns with their broader financial strategy to optimise the squad while generating funds for new signings. The club will hope to secure around £20million from Lokonga’s transfer, a fee that reflects his potential and the investment made in him. This amount could significantly bolster Arsenal’s transfer budget, allowing them to pursue other targets that fit better into Arteta’s tactical plans.

Several clubs across Europe are expected to show interest in Lokonga, given his age and potential. His previous performances at Anderlecht, coupled with his experience in the Premier League, make him an attractive prospect. Lokonga’s versatility in midfield, capable of playing both defensive and box-to-box roles, adds to his market value. The challenge for Arsenal and Lokonga’s agent will be to find a club willing to meet the £20million valuation.
