Arsenal fans might still be hoping for a defensive addition before the season kicks off next week but they seem pretty happy that Wenger has made use of an ‘internal solution’.
When Krystian Bielik arrived at Arsenal for £2million 18 months ago, he was described as a ‘holding midfielder’ but his transition to central defence has certainly been encouraging.
Last season Bielik played most of it as a central defender for the reserves and he also suddenly matured a lot physically. As he grew stronger and taller he appeared more comfortable in a defensive role, so much so that he has really impressed fans in that position in the clubs pre-season games.
Bielik now has the physical presence of a mature central defender and the ball skills of a holding midfielder. His time in midfield has certainly helped him develop his ability on the ball and the potential to play out from the back will appeal to Arsene Wenger who of course wants an Arsenal team that is comfortable on the ball in any position.
Arsene has said Bielik will ‘get some games’ in the first team this season. I expect that to be in the Capital One Cup and most of the Polish defenders games to continue to come in the reserves. It’s easy to forget that he is still just 18! He has plenty of time to get to the top.
Here’s what the Arsenal fans thought of his performances recently.

Bielik as centre back, like a new signing…

Arsenal have got two very promising centre-backs in Holding & Bielik. Total cost £5m. Good to see club can still scout such young quality.

Bielik very impressive again. Still has some improvements to make but suits Arsenal’s style of play perfectly.

Bielik’s passing choice and execution have been great to watch. Aerial presence also, interesting to see how he develops.

Bielik is superb with the ball, as expected for someone who has played #8/#10 at the professional level. Has the body for CB too.
