José Fonte
Unlike the other players in this blog, I was unable to find any quotes either on or attributed to José Fonte, so his Southampton chant will have to suffice: José Fonte baby, José Fonte oooohhhh (sung to the tune of Don’t You Want Me Baby? by the Human League). Fonte (30) started his senior career in Portugal during the 2002-03 season and played for six different teams (Sporting B, Felgueiras, Vitória Setúbal, Benfica, Paços Ferreira and Estrela Amadora) before being loaned to Crystal Palace in 2007. This move to Crystal Palace was made permanent in the 2008-09 season until he signed for Southampton on 9 January 2010. He recently signed a new three-year contract with The Saints ahead of the 2014-15 season. Although this means he’s tied in until 2017 his ability both defensively and offensively is impressively – he’s scored a total of 13 goals since first signing for them.
In 2010, the season he scored seven goals for Southampton, he was named in the PFA Team of the Year: 2010–11 League One.
