4. Diego Simeone
This Argentinean accomplished the impossible last season. Diego Simeone beat out the world’s richest clubs with a squad not coming to close to their cash valuation. His teams mentality is simple, press the opponent for 90 minutes and score decisive goals. With talent in every position, Atletico Madrid needed a well thought approach to every single match. This consequentially led the team to their first Spanish League title since 1996. Simeone organised his side to be defensively sound and clinical when going forward. The almost unimaginable task became a reality when they drew at the Nou Camp to clinch the title but if that wasn’t enough, Simeone led Atletico to the Champions League final for the first time since 1974. Having already won the Europa League, Copa Del Rey, Spanish and European Supercup, the Champions League was the final piece in the puzzle. Atletico were extremely unlucky having gone into the game without Arda Turan and subbing Diego Costa out early in the game but they still managed to be ahead 1-0 till the 90th minute. But his exhausted side couldn’t manage to defend a last gasp Real Madrid corner and were defeated in extra time.
Simeone’s tactics are likened to Jose Mourinho in the sense that they are more focused on winning by any means necessary rather than playing stylish football. Once they’re ahead, they could see out the win in most cases. Arsenal football club are branded as a side that play beautiful football under Wenger but what if a new approach is necessary in an ever changing game. Simeone might take over the club and care less about the passing game and focus on a high pressure game, squeezing goals out of the opposition. This could be for the better as Arsenal are overpowered in many high profile games and aren’t well organised for 90 minutes. Simeone’s method would change the branding but it could lead to many successful seasons.
