Done Deal: Defensive Midfielder Signs Contract With Arsenal

It has finally been confirmed that Mikel Arteta has signed a one year extension at Arsenal. The news comes on the same evening where it was revealed that Morgan Schneiderlin’s asking price has rose to £27million.

Arteta, 33 has signed a years extension at the club. It is thought he could take up a coaching role after this year. Mathieu Flamini is still being offered around Europe, but Arsenal’s interest in a defensive midfielder may now be fading.

I would suggest that if Arsenal manage to offload Flamini combined with the release of Abou Diaby – there is still room for another midfield addition. Arteta will only be around for one more year and we don’t know how well his body will cope next season. Francis Coquelin is the only reliable option to anchor our midfield currently.

Arsenal, who were reluctant to meet Southampton’s £25million asking price will no doubt stay out of the bidding for Schneiderlin – with the asking price always rising. The French midfielder is reportedly asking for wages in excess of £100,000 per week.

Are you happy to see Arteta sign on at Arsenal? Would it have been better to let him go to make room for another addition, or will his experience be good for one more season? Personally I hope we still sign a midfielder, Arteta can do a job for one more season but he should only be used sparingly. Flamini is the one who needs to be replaced this summer.
