Debate: Who Should Start The Season At Right-Back?

Callum Chambers

Although he’s not necessarily running as a standout choice at right-back, the youngster does offer some sort of competition for our recognised duo.

The English international raised more than just eyebrows when he first arrived from Southampton at the beginning of last season.

Chambers arrived at the Emirates with a tough price tag to justify, as Wenger forked out £16million to reinforce his back line and add to the ever-growing English contingent.

Gunners fans were left confused as to where the 20-year-old would fit in with this Arsenal squad after featuring at right-back, centre back and in the holding midfield role at the Saints.

But since his summer move, Chambers has enjoyed 36 appearances in all competitions with his new side, including 23 in the Premier League.

However, a steady run of performances was brought to an abrupt halt when Gabriel Paulista was captured in the January transfer window, suggesting Chambers could be on his way out.

Talks turned to Chambers returning to his former Saints to gain some regular playing time in the forthcoming season, something that Wenger may struggle to offer.

But those reports were recently put to bed by the Arsenal boss, who confirmed he was looking to develop the young defender as an out-and-out central defender, making way for the future departure of Per Mertesacker.

And although those comments confirm we won’t be seeing much of Chambers flying down the right-wing, there is no reason to believe Bellerin and Debuchy are safe.

Chambers played a number of games at right-back last year, and with the right tuition he could prove to be a surprise contender for the full-back slot.

He is beginning to command the back line as he grows at this club, and with enough confidence he can begin to push forward.

His overall defensive game is steady enough, but he struggles to act in the final third at the moment, but that is definitely something that Wenger will want to work on.

The boss will know if either of Debuchy or Bellerin are seriously injured then Chambers immediately comes in as a rotation player on the right hand side, something that Gabriel cannot offer.

Chambers will be looking to break into the first team on a regular basis this season, and if our defence can stay fit it’s looking like a very strong set of options.
