Arsenal have made some contact with Corinthians about a transfer for Alexandre Pato, former Gunner Edu has revealed.
Currently on loan at Sao Paulo, Pato is being linked with a whole host of European clubs and is available, unlike most, for a move in January.
Another attacking option may appeal to Arsene Wenger, although any deal for Pato would certainly be considered a risk.
Former Arsenal midfielder Edu, who now works for Corinthians told press: “They know our players. I had lunch with Arsene, he asked about him, and others.”
Pato, 26 has scored 8 goals in 14 games for Sao Paulo this season. Despite this decent goalscoring record, Corinthians are desperate to sell him – because of his wages.
“Yes [I’m praying to sell him]. We know how difficult it would be if he were to return. I’m quite sure [he will be sold],” Corinthians president Roberto De Andrade told Globo Esport.
Arsenal will face competition for Pato’s signature if their interest is serious. Tottenham and Liverpool are amongst those clubs to be heavily linked with a move for the Brazilian.
With Theo Walcott due back in a couple of weeks and Danny Welbeck expected to be back in the new year, at the moment it seems unlikely that Wenger would want to add to his attacking options in January – although if a world class player became available that may chance. Pato though, is not world class.
