Chambers Reveals His Favourite Position To Play

To many Arsenal fans, Callum Chambers seems like the type of player who leaves his talking for out on the pitch, but the defender has now outlined something we were all wondering.

When talking to the Arsenal match-day programme, the 19-year-old stated he prefers to play as a centre back more than any other defensive position in the team.

“I feel like I read the game better there, I feel more assured in myself there, which is helpful.

“I played at centre back when I was with Southampton Under-16s and then a couple more times for England Under-19s. I have felt a bit more comfortable at centre back in every game I’ve played there.”

The English international joined the Gunners back in July, for an eye-opening £16million, but has made an instant impact amongst the first team.

With injuries to both Matthieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny early on in the season, Chambers was given a chance to step in to the mix. He has so far made 28 starts for the club, but has most recently been utilised as a substitute, with 8 appearances coming from off the bench.

The defender has featured highly on the right full-back position for most of the season, with Wenger keen to rotate him and Hector Bellerin to promote a healthy competition.

“I feel that right back can be more demanding physically, because you have to get up and down the pitch more.” Chambers added.

“Last year I thought that right back was my position but I’ve started playing at centre back this year, which has made me wonder if that will be my position.”

Since January the appearances have dropped slightly for the youngster, and the capture of Gabriel has proved to be another obstacle in the way of featuring regularly in the centre back role.

But it was never Wenger’s intention to play Chambers so much, and reassured Arsenal fans that the defender would contribute a lot more to the future of Arsenals back line.

Chambers will soon travel with the England Under-21 squad to this summers Euro 2015 tournament, so a great deal of experience can be gained in a leading position at the back.
