Arsenal and Tottenham will be on alert with the news that Victor Wanyama has reportedly asked to leave Southampton this summer.
Sky Sports suggested on Saturday evening that Wanyama, 24 wants to leave Southampton – but they fail to give a reason. Spurs have been linked with the ball winning midfielder over the last week and Arsenal have watched the Kenyan for some time.
Whilst he’s not world class, I wouldn’t be against signing Wanyama. He’s a player who could rotate with Coquelin and share that defensive burden in front of the back four. He’s a big improvement on Mathieu Flamini, who he would replace in the squad and at his age, he can still improve.
If it’s a case of Arsenal or Tottenham – I’m sure he’d join the Gunners. He has made clear his intentions to play in the Champions League again and of course that is something Arsenal can and Tottenham cannot offer.
He’d be guaranteed starts at Tottenham, but it seems strange that he’d bother to ask for a transfer to move from one Europa club to another. Southampton are almost at the same level as Tottenham, so it’d shock me if he forced a move to Spurs.
Ronald Koeman has already brought in Oriol Romeu and Jordy Clasie – a move that may indicate they have already prepared for Wanyama’s exit.

For Wanyama to ask for a transfer at this stage of the transfer window, it probably tells us that a club has a serious interest in him and has already opened talks. Considering Arsenal passed up the chance to sign Morgan Schneiderlin, I would think that a move to Tottenham is much more likely at this stage.
Arsenal fans will be desperate for a new signing and there is less than two weeks left of the transfer window. Who would you like to see arrive? Comment below.
