Arsenal are ready to secure their first major signing of the summer, with a deal for Jackson Martinez ‘on the cards’, according to The Mirror.
Manager Arsene Wenger has been linked with a move for the Porto star over the last three years, but has failed to capture the services of the striker after opting to stick with cheaper alternatives and internal solutions.
However, over the last two seasons the boss has shown he is not afraid to pay over the odds, and finally Gunners’ fans can look forward to signing players of higher calibre.
It is reported that Martinez would be available for a modest £24million, after he confirmed his Portuguese side have allowed him to look at other options this summer.
That price tag can be made possible by offloading some of the deadwood that has built up at the club, with Lukas Podolski, Joel Campbell and Yaya Sanogo all set to get the axe. The Mirror claim a deal for Martinez is ‘on the cards’ if Wenger can offload that trio.
Those three Arsenal players will ultimately struggle to gain any sort of game time this coming season, and Wenger will be prepared to lose all three.
If we managed to sell all three, we would probably raise at least £15million towards Martinez’ signing, whilst also freeing up around £150,000 per week on the wage bill.
Martinez has recently capped off yet another impressive season at Porto, becoming top goalscorer for the Champions League side with 28 goals.
