Arsene Wenger has fuelled speculation that a move for striker, Karim Benzema, could still be on following his latest press conference.
Arsenal have been linked with the 27-year-old during several transfer windows over the years, and his most recent comments have only raised the hopes of fans worldwide.
It’s well known that the Gunners’ faithful are always expecting a fresh face to be added at the Emirates, and capturing Benzema would put to bed any negative views against the Arsenal boss.
However, when being asked whether a deal was in place for the French international, Wenger remained coy whilst giving a short but suggestive response;
I don’t know where that story comes from but that’s not happening at the moment.
Now many people would simply read those comments and believe the worst, however it’s the fact he has said “at the moment”, suggesting there is something planned before the summer window closes.
And Wenger hasn’t exactly been a stranger to transfer deadline day, signing the less exciting likes of Danny Welbeck and Mikel Arteta in recent years.
But this time it seems the boss could be on the verge of adding another name to the stellar signing that was Petr Cech, after he assured fans’ he was only in the market for the right player;
If I find a player with an exceptional potential who can strengthen the squad then I will do it. It depends who is on the market.
It’s not easy at the moment because many clubs are out there to buy, and the number of players who can strengthen the big teams in Europe is very restricted.
We do not guarantee that we can sign someone and I’m happy with the squad that I have.
The Arsenal boss is currently preparing his side to face Everton in tomorrow’s Barclay’s Asia Trophy final, as they move into day five of their tour of Singapore.
Following the Gunners’ 4-0 victory over Singapore XI, they will line up in a much stronger way with more first-team names on the team sheet.
The 27-man squad includes new £11million new boy, Petr Cech, who is expected to make his debut in an Arsenal jersey tomorrow afternoon.
You can watch Arsenal take on Everton in their second pre-season friendly game live on Sky Sports 1, which kicks off at 13:30 UK time.
