Journalist Says Arsenal Will Make €40million Bid For 21-Goal Striker

Things are a little bit strange on the Arsenal transfer front at the moment, nothing is concrete but the work is being put in to land some top signings.

Arsene Wenger has already stated that the club are very active in the summer transfer market, which has only increased speculation as to who might be switching to the Emirates.

And according to the head writer for Squawka, Arsenal are lining up a fresh bid for long-term target Alexandre Lacazette, despite the recent comments from Lyon.

Greg Stobart believes the Gunners haven’t given up their chase to land the Ligue 1 centre forward, and are willing to offer €40m (£33.7m) in a last-ditch attempt to get their man.

And that’s what is so frustrating about this saga, that although he’s ready to make bids, Wenger isn’t adapting to a transfer market that has doubled in price in the space of a year.

12 months ago £33m would have got you a player like Lacazette, but with targets running out and TV deals in the bag, clubs are having to fork out big bucks to welcome new talent.

Lyon have already stated openly that their prized possession is “irreplaceable” whilst laughing off the reported £29.7m bid placed earlier this summer.

However, in this day and age any player can decide where he wants to play football regardless of contracts, and if the French international wants to move on it’ll be difficult for Lyon to stop him.

That offer of just over €33m was made back in June, and after Mauro Icardi and Gonzalo Higuain both confirmed their futures, Lacazette now stands as the front-runner.

This is classic Wenger, bid low and hope they will accept straight away, a tactic that saw him miss out on the world-class Luis Suarez who eventually moved to Barcelona.

Lacazette scored 21 goals in Ligue 1 last season, if he could manage the same amount in an Arsenal shirt then he’d certainly be worth £40million to them. Yes he’ll be playing in a tougher league, but he’ll also have better players around him – he’s likely to thrive ahead of Mesut Ozil.

If Wenger wants success this season then he’s going to have to compete with the big clubs not just on the pitch, but across the transfer window and that means getting the cheque book out.

I think we’ll need to see some departures before any new player gets snapped in an Arsenal shirt, and the future of Mathieu Debuchy and Wojciech Szczesny looks to be the first to get resolved.
