Arsenal Tweets of the Week

Every week I’ll be bringing you Arsenal Tweets of the Week. This is a roundup from a small selection of Arsenal-related tweets as chosen by me.

A refreshingly non-biased pre-match report written for Bleacher Report on the Community Shield game taking place at Wembley between Arsenal and Manchester City on Sunday 10 August. I particularly like the sentiment from Janusz Michallik that it was a season of “what-ifs” for the Gunners in 2013/14. Let’s see if the Community Shield yields the same from the fans post-match.

A tweet from Jack Reacher (not THAT Jack Reacher as portrayed by Tom Cruise from the books by Lee Child) via the Daily Mail Online states that Wenger has chosen Mikel Arteta as the replacement team captain for Thomas Vermaelen. The transfer of Vermaelen to Barcelona has now been officially confirmed – he follows in the footsteps of Thierry Henry, Alex Song and Cesc Fabregas in joining one of the best teams in Europe.

As Arteta wore the captain’s armband for the majority of the 2013/14 season this won’t come as any surprise. However, with the rumour mill in full force regarding a possible departure of Arteta from Arsenal I wonder if Wenger has another replacement up his sleeve?

For those unable to attend or digitally tune into the Arsenal Members’ Day on Thursday, Arsenal have provided a photographic memory of the day. I took my 12-year old daughter along for the day (our past two attempts at Festive Members’ Days a few years back ended in them being called off due to snow).

This time the sun shone all day long. I can highly recommend it as a free day out for Arsenal members, particularly for those with children. There was a training session with the players, a Q&A session with Pat Rice, Martin Keown and Freddie Ljungberg, a few (too) short autograph sessions and a special video made for Oliver Giroud, Laurent Koscielny, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshire featuring their songs as sung by the crowd (video to appear on YouTube at a later date).

Mesut Özil is excited to be playing against Beşiktaş J.K. – for those of you unfamiliar with the pronunciation of Turkish it is pronounced “Beshiktash” – who play in Turkey’s Süper Lig. One of the comparisons between Arsenal and Beşiktaş is that neither team has been relegated to a lower division. You may not know many of their players, but I’d be surprised if none of you had heard of ex-Chelsea striker Demba Ba and, after his performance in the World Cup, USMNT midfielder Jermaine Jones. At least we’ll be able to correctly pronounce their names unlike Özil’s!
