Arsenal have plenty to do in attack this summer, but they are still keen on making at least one defensive signing.
Arsenal are actively exploring defensive reinforcements this summer, with the club targeting a Premier League centre-back capable of operating on both the left and right side of central defence.
The Gunners had been seriously interested in signing Dean Huijsen, but the highly-rated Juventus defender has now agreed a deal to join Real Madrid instead.
After missing out, attention has turned to domestic alternatives. A source has told Fresh Arsenal that the club are now looking closely at Nathan Collins of Brentford and Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace. Arsenal have tracked both players for an extended period, recognising their ability to contribute immediately while also offering long-term value.
Guehi, who has just one year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, is seen as a strong fit for Mikel Arteta’s system. However, he may need convincing, with Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba firmly established as the starting pair. That said, Arsenal are planning to rotate more frequently next season, particularly with Champions League and domestic cup demands. Guehi’s comfort playing on either side of central defence makes him an ideal option to slot in when needed.
The same is true for Collins, though his situation is more complex. The Irish international only joined Brentford last summer and is under contract until 2029. Despite this, Arsenal admire the 24-year-old’s physical presence, defensive awareness, and potential to develop into a long-term first-choice option.
Both Collins and Guehi are 24 years old and already Premier League-proven. They are viewed as players who could initially serve as strong rotation options but ultimately push to become starters in the years ahead.
A move for either could cast doubt over the future of Jakub Kiwior, who has filled in on both flanks of central defence. Kiwior, though left-footed, has occasionally covered for Saliba on the right, but it’s not his natural position. With Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel already in place on the left, competition is increasing, and Kiwior may find opportunities harder to come by.
While many Arsenal fans are focused on the need for new forwards this window, defensive reinforcements remain firmly on the agenda. Strengthening depth at centre-back — particularly with versatile, high-upside players — is a key part of the Gunners’ summer planning.
It is also possible that Arsenal sign long-term target Jorrel Hato, who looks to be on the market this summer. Stay close to Fresh Arsenal for more Arsenal transfer news this summer.
