Arsenal set to sign goalkeeper and ready bid for another in triple GK shakeup

Arsenal look set to make three goalkeeper signings this summer in a big shakeup.

The club have successfully negotiated an agreement with Ajax to sign promising goalkeeper Tommy Setford.

The two clubs had been engaged in extensive discussions over the summer to finalise a deal that would bring the England Under-20 international to the Emirates Stadium. These talks have culminated in a compromise on a fee, reported to be in the region of £869k plus add-ons, with Setford expected to sign an initial four-year contract.

Setford, highly regarded for his shot-stopping abilities and composure under pressure, is seen as a significant addition to Arsenal’s goalkeeping ranks. At just 19 years old, he has already made a name for himself in Ajax’s youth setup and has been tipped for a bright future. Setford will likely serve as the clubs first choice under 23 keeper and third choice senior option.

However, Arsenal’s activity in the goalkeeper market doesn’t stop there. The club is also keen on bolstering their goalkeeping options further by making an improved bid for Wolves’ Dan Bentley. Their initial offer for Bentley was turned down, but Arsenal are prepared to return with a better proposal to secure the experienced shot-stopper according to The Athletic.

Bentley, known for his reliable performances and leadership qualities, would bring valuable experience to the squad. This move highlights Arsenal’s commitment to strengthening every position as they aim to compete on multiple fronts in the upcoming season.

The pursuit of both Setford and Bentley indicates a clear strategy from Arsenal to ensure depth and quality in their goalkeeping department having released several youth keepers this summer.

While Setford’s youth and potential make him an exciting long-term prospect, Bentley’s experience would offer immediate solidity and mentorship.

Arsenal have also signed David Raya this summer, and so they face the prospect of lining up next season with three goalkeepers that didn’t officially belong to the club last season.

Aaron Ramsdale looks set to leave, with the club hoping to recoup £30million from a sale, though a loan may also be considered to help him restore value after a year on the bench.

Setford and Bentley would likely arrive for a joint cost of around £1.5million, meaning any sale for Ramsdale would help boost the coffers to enable strengthening elsewhere in the squad.
