Arsenal are preparing a shock £10million bid for Manchester United defender, Jonny Evans, according to reports.
Arsene Wenger is keen to add depth to his defensive options during the summer period, and the Daily Mirror believe the Gunners are interested in Evans.
The 27-year-old is currently facing a tough time at the Red Devils, with Louis Van Gaal limiting his appearances at centre back since taking charge last season.
Evans made just 12 starts in the Premier League last campaign, which could be enough of a suggestion that his time is up at Old Trafford.
And that is welcome news for Wenger, who would use the Northern Ireland international as a back-up to the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, as they are both into their 30’s now.
An asking price of £10million for the services of Evans is a justified one, as he comes with a wealth of Premier League experience and a winning mentality, something Wenger is bringing to this club once again.
Arsenal however could face stiff competition for Evans’ signature, after West Brom have reportedly made contact into the availability of the defender, who can also play at right full-back.
The Baggies are keen to build a strong defensive partnership with Jolean Lescott, following their ultimately average season under Tony Pulis.
Pulis can offer the assurance that Evans will feature as one of the first names on the team sheet, which is something that the player will want as he closes in on his peak years.
The only problem that West Brom may find are the wage demands believed to be in the region of £65,000, and any sort of deal with the Birmingham club will come down to that factor.
Can we really expect Wenger to dip into the market for a Manchester United reject though? Long gone are the days of signing Mikael Silvestre.
