Arsenal have ‘entered discussions’ to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, SportBild reports- but is he really the right midfield solution for Arsenal?
Gundogan has been a long term target for the Gunners, with recent reports indicating that the Gunners were readying a second £20million bid for the German. Whether it’s to Arsenal or somewhere else, a deal for Gundogan to leave Germany this summer looks likely, reports say.
Gundogan’s contract expires at the end of next season, and with Klopp off in the summer, it seems unlikely the player will extend. Whilst it seems like he will be available this summer, has Francis Coquelin’s impact not highlighted what we really need at the base of our midfield? A defensive shield whose primary purpose is to anchor the midfield and win the ball back.
That’s what Coquelin does so well, at the moment he’s the only player in the squad who possesses such qualities, and so I think we need another player like him. They aren’t easy to find, but I’d rather spend £20million elsewhere, sorry Ilkay.
Another concern with Gundogan is his fitness. He is yet to find his pre-injury form which earned him all the plaudits. I don’t doubt that he can’t re-discover it, but is it worth the risk?
I’m not sure, what do you think? Is Ilkay the answer to our midfield deficiencies? I just feel like Jack Wilshere could do a very similar job. Let me know your thoughts by commenting below.
