Arsenal ‘in contact’ with long-term target

Arsenal are monitoring the situation of Pepe Reina at Liverpool and have asked to be kept informed of any news following talks between the player and club – according to a report in the London Evening Standard.

It was the inevitable link. It reminds me of Sebastien Frey and Arsenal link bank in the naughties. Simon Mignolet completed his £9million move to Liverpool yesterday and with Pepe Reina at the club, rumours began to spread. Many expect Reina to replace Valdes at the Nou Camp, but Valdes has stated he will stay at the Spanish champions for another season.

Arsene Wenger appears to be a real admirer of the Liverpool stopper, he’s been linked with him pretty much every summer (and winter) in the last five years. Despite extended runs in the team, neither Woijech Szczesny, Lukas Fabianski or Vito Mannone managed to grab the number 1 spot by the scruff of it’s neck for the Gunners. Just as Fabianski started to look assured between the sticks he picked up another injury, something which has hampered the 28 year-olds career heavily.

Arsenal have been linked with several goalkeepers over the last few months including Asmir Begovic, Victor Valdes and Rene Adler. With Johan Djourou wanted by Hamburg and Hannover, perhaps he could be used as a makeweight to bring Adler to the Emirates – just a thought.
