Marseille have emerged as the favourites to sign want-away defender Mathieu Debuchy after realising they could bag him for absolutely nothing.

According to a report from the reliable French news outlet L’Equipe, the 32-year-old is being lined up as a signing that could add experience and stability to their season.

With 27-year-old Hiroki Sakai currently the first-choice right-back, Debuchy would come in to settle the team as a back-up and also add some level of competition.

However, any sort of move for Debuchy will be hindered on Marseille’s ability to trim the squad over the next few days, with Cabella, Fanni and Bedimo all set to be booted out of the club.

In order to help Marseille fund Debuchy’s wages it appears Arsene Wenger will settle for an incredibly minimal fee simply to enhance his chances of making more signings this window.

Debuchy currently earns £65,000 a week at Arsenal and considering he plays the majority of his games for the Under 23’s, that’s a huge financial loss.

Both parties want the deal to go through as there’s a wealth of positives to suit everyone, but L’Equipe stress that this could go down to the final days of the market.
