Following a report from David Ornstein, it has emerged that Mohamed Elneny suffered a significant injury during Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday.

Despite the Egyptian lasting the full 90 minutes, it was later found out that an injury had occurred which will see him sidelined for a substantial period of time.

With Thomas Partey also nursing a minor injury, it leaves Arsenal short just over 24 hours before they are due to take on Aston Villa in the Premier League.

With an away trip to Manchester United to contend with at the weekend, Arsenal could now look to the transfer window to resolve a big issue in midfield.

For the interim, Granit Xhaka is a stable option in the heart of midfield but Mikel Arteta will now have to rely on a relatively unused Sambi Lokonga.

The only other short-term option is to bring in Oleksandr Zinchenko to play more of a central role, but question marks remain over his fitness.

Arsenal’s £32m signing was left out of the Fulham game for precautionary reasons and is reportedly keen to play more of a holding midfield role.

Question marks will now be raised on who Arsenal could bring in, with long-term target Youri Tielemans a favourite to be snapped up in an easy deal.

Leicester are resigned to losing the Belgian who has just one year left on his deal and would be willing to cash in on a move that could rise to £35m.

Arsenal have played the long game all summer but with just two days left of the window it could now become a race against time to hire a new recruit.
