The 27-year-old was tipped to light up the tournament hosted in America, and with three goals and two assists to his name he’s played a huge part in his nations victory.

In a repeat of last years final, Chile saw off tournament favourites Argentina on penalties following a 0-0 draw that saw both sides reduced to 10 men before half time.

Having played every minute of their five previous games, Alexis appeared fatigued towards the climax and was substituted during extra time as he appeared to limp off.

But despite another tense final that saw Chile win 4-2 on penalties, the game will be remembered for other reasons as Lionel Messi shocked the world by retiring from international football.

The 29-year-old has always stated he would retire when he no longer enjoyed football, and having finished as a runner-up in three finals in as many years, he felt it was time to pull down the curtain.

With a World Cup coming up in just two years time many fans and experts believe Messi will perform a U-turn on his decision, but the future doesn’t look bright for Argentina.

Other Gunners stars on show at the Copa America included Colombian shot-stopper David Ospina who was awarded man of the match during his countries third place play-off victory.

Joel Campbell was also in action for Costa Rica who were knocked out during the group stages after falling short to USA and Colombia, meaning an early holiday for the winger.

As for Alexis, he will now be handed a brief holiday spell following an intense tournament, but knowing our star man he’ll be back training within no time.

Arsene Wenger once stated that Alexis’ desire to train sometimes can be his biggest weakness, with the former Barcelona man not knowing when to stop at times.

Arsenal will want all of their stars fully fit as they begin preparations for pre-season, which kicks off in late July with a trip to USA where they will feature in three friendlies.
