Arsène Wenger: We Are Short, But Will Strengthen In January

Arsene Wenger has suggested the Gunners will be active in the transfer market in January.

The Gunners are short of defensive options, and Wenger has admitted they maybe should have signed another defender in the summer.

“I agree we could have bought one more player, we didn’t find [him]. We will try in December to rectify that because we are a bit short with the injuries we have and, overall, I think we will rectify that on the transfer market in January.”

Arsenal will play Hull City tomorrow with Calum Chambers suspended and Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny injured. That leaves Wenger with only four fit senior defenders, that’s including Bellerin and two left backs. Monreal will be forced to start at centre back.

The real issue here is, Arsene and Arsenal had the whole summer to strengthen the team. Why did we go into the season short? What Wenger is saying is that there were no defenders available that were suitable for Arsenal in the summer. That is such a silly thing to say. If there were none available then, why does he think it will so easy to find one in January? It will actually be a hell of a lot harder.

Meanwhile, Gazidis told fans at the AGM that Arsenal aren’t as rich as we thought:

“We do try to keep a reasonable amount of cash available for further investment in the team. We don’t want to disclose that publicly because it’s obviously commercially and competitively sensitive but I’m afraid it’s nowhere near the numbers that are quoted and which fuel some degree of dissatisfaction. It’s quite untrue to suggest that the club is sitting on a huge cash pile that, for some unspecified reason, it refuses to use.”
