Report: Arsenal have new first choice striker target, accelerating talks

Arsenal have been trying to sign a striker for several windows, and the name of their main target has remained somewhat mysterious. Now, a favourite appears to be emerging with reports suggesting talks are accelerating ahead of pre-season starting.

Arsenal are intensifying their pursuit of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres and hope to have the Sporting CP star on board in time for their upcoming pre-season tour of Asia, according to Correio da ManhĂ£.

The Gunners have made Gyökeres one of their top attacking targets this summer as Andrea Berta leads the charge to bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad. The 27-year-old enjoyed a sensational couple of seasons in Portugal. His powerful, high-intensity style and clinical edge have drawn widespread attention across Europe.

Interestingly, this push for Gyökeres comes as Arsenal appear to cool their interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Å eÅ¡ko. Despite being long linked with a move to North London, Å eÅ¡ko’s rising wage demands and Leipzig’s reluctance to accept anything below his full release clause are believed to have complicated a potential deal. While Å eÅ¡ko is seen as a high-upside talent, Gyökeres may now represent a more financially accessible option—and crucially, one who is better prepared to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

Sporting were said to be holding out for Gyökeres’ €100 million release clause, but Arsenal are exploring a structured deal with bonuses and achievable add-ons to get closer to that figure. The player himself believes he has a gentlemens agreement to leave for a lower amount.

The club want the striker signed before their Asia tour, allowing Arteta ample time to integrate him into the squad’s tactical setup.

With Gabriel Jesus struggling for consistent fitness and Kai Havertz often operating deeper, Arsenal see Gyökeres as a potential game-changer at No.9. His proven ability to lead the line, press aggressively, and finish clinically makes him an ideal fit for Arteta’s dynamic system.

While several European clubs remain interested in the Swedish international, Arsenal’s proactive approach and the appeal of a Premier League return—following a successful spell at Coventry City—could give them the upper hand.
